Wayne County Drainage Work Requires Temporary Road Closure

Wayne County Drainage Work Requires Temporary Road Closure

A 1.3-mile section of Old Mount Olive Highway is scheduled to close this week for the replacement of two pipes that will improve storm drainage.

Old Mount Olive Highway will be closed to through-traffic between Everett Road and Parker Road. The closure will last from 7:30 a.m. Monday until 5 p.m. Friday.

Maintenance crews for the N.C. Department of Transportation will replace two crossline pipes that failed underneath the pavement in a recent storm.

This work is weather dependent, and the schedule is subject to change.

Drivers should be alert for crews working in this area and allow extra time for the detour.

Detour info:

  • Drivers headed south will be detoured onto Southern Wayne Drive, U.S. 117 Alternate and North Church Street in Mount Olive.
  • Most people going north will be able to use Everett, Kelly Springs and Parker roads.
  • However, tractors-trailers loaded with timber will not be able to turn right from Parker Road onto Old Mount Olive Highway due to a steep railroad crossing near that junction; they instead will be detoured further along Emmaus Church Road and Brewington Drive before returning to Old Mount Olive Highway.
