The management and staff of Serenity Memorial Funeral Home join with the Lanier and connected families to announce the earthly transition of Mrs. Betty Lou Lanier, age 81, who departed this earthly life at the Wayne UNC Health Care, of Goldsboro, NC.

Mrs. Betty Lou Darden Lanier was born on May 1, 1939, in Bladen County to the late John and Rodie Stevens Darden. She departed this earthly life on Saturday, December 19, 2020, at the Wayne UNC Health Care Center.

Betty (as affectionately known) received her formal education in Sampson County and was employed at Sunbridge Nursing Home for many years as a cook.

Betty was a devoted wife and mother, and grandmother. She loved her family, Goshen Disciples Church, and singing where ever she was needed, but of all things, she loved people and serving God.
She was united in holy matrimony to Joseph Lanier on August 19, 1956, and to this union, there were 6 children born.

Mother Lanier was a member of the Goshen Disciples Church of Christ in Faison, NC. She served faithfully as a Mother and choir member. She was always willing to do whatever was necessary to promote the good of the church. She will be remembered for her heavenly voice and singing “ When you hear of my homegoing.” and “One day I am going Where Jesus is.”

She was predeceased by her parents; John and Rodie Stevens Darden, 1 daughter Hilda R. Lanier; nine brothers: T.I., Willie, Leroy, Joe, Lewis, and , Milton, William McCoy, Linwood Darden and Daniel Darden; three sisters: Beatrice Teachey, Norvella Johnson, and Ethel McCoy; 1grandchild, Montrell Lanier, and I great-grandchild Amiya Walker.

Mother Lanier leaves to cherish her precious memories her husband of nearly 65 years, Joseph Lanier of the home; two sons: Joseph Lanier, Jr., and Donnie C. Lanier both of the home; 3 daughters: Delores A. Martin (Larry) of Mt. Olive, NC, Lora J. Walker (Melvin) of Goldsboro, NC, and Brenda G. Lanier of Temple Hills, MD; 14 grandchildren; 30 Great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-grandchild; 2 sisters: Bernice Barksdale (Clarence) of Dudley, NC and Bettie Goodman (Atlas) ; 4 sisters-in-law: Rachel Kornegay, Sadie Mae Darden, Janice Darden, and Rebecca Darden.
