Sarah “Sallie” Elizabeth Griswold Southerland, 88, passed away on Monday, November 2, 2020 at Rex Hospital in Raleigh.
Sallie was born in Wayne County on September 30, 1932 to Collier J. Griswold, Jr. and Sally Britt Griswold. She attended Cathedral Latin High School in Raleigh. She married Charles R. Southerland in 1951, and they had three children. She was called in later life to a career in nursing and graduated from Wayne Community College in 1975 with an Associate’s Degree in Nursing. She was a Registered Nurse, specializing in Oncology and practiced nursing at Wayne Memorial Hospital for 22 years.
Sallie was a long time member of St. Luke United Methodist Church and was a devoted mother to her children and husband. She enjoyed fishing and cooking and spoiling her grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held on Thursday, November 5th, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. at Willow Dale Cemetery with Rev. Dan Baer officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the cemetery.
Sallie is survived by her son, Charles Rebert “Chuck” Southerland, Jr. and wife Wynona (Nonie) Johnson Southerland of Fairbanks, AK; daughter, Elizabeth Southerland Crew and husband Robert Crew of Raleigh; and her grandchildren, Lauren Elise Southerland of Walnut Creek, CA, Kirsten Lee Southerland of Fairbanks, AK, Jacob Southerland Crew of Raleigh, Heather Thompson Crew of Seattle, WA, and Rebekah Kent of Jacksonville, FL.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Charles R. Southerland, Sr, her son, David Andrew Southerland, her brother Collier Joseph Griswold, III, and her sister Mary Delores Griswold.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be given in her memory to St. Luke United Methodist Church, 1608 E. Pine Street, Goldsboro, NC 27530.
