Athletes Of The Week: Kendall Leigh

Wayne Christian senior Kendall Leigh is enthusiastic and hard-working by nature. She loves leading her fellow cheerleaders and celebrating every time the Eagles score a touchdown or make a big play.

Since her freshman year, Leigh has blossomed into one of Wayne Christian’s top student-athletes.

The senior class president is a steady contributor for Wayne Christian’s cheerleading squad and girls’ soccer team. For her commitment to her school and teammates, she is this week’s Brian Allan State Farm Insurance Female Athlete of the Week.

“I just started cheerleading in high school,” Leigh said. “I wanted to have fun with my friends, and I always liked watching the pep rallies, so I decided to join.

“I like getting to go to the games because I’m a huge sports fan.”

Leigh is extremely grateful for all her years at Wayne Christian. She has taken her knowledge from the last four years to teach younger cheerleaders and build on her skills.

She brings positivity to the team, which is much appreciated by both her coaches and teammates. Always willing to help a teammate practice a move at any given time, Leah is always ready to go the extra mile for the team.

“We coach the younger cheerleaders from the elementary and middle school,” Leigh said. “It’s about giving the younger girls a chance to be exposed to cheerleading, too.”

A member of the National Honor Society, Leigh hopes to attend the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill next fall and major in finance.

“It’s been fun being a cheerleader in high school, but I think I’m going to let it stay in high school and move onto something else,” Leigh said.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this season has certainly been different, but Leigh has enjoyed mentoring teammates that remind her of herself while also continuing to sharpen her own craft.

Leigh is extremely grateful for her coaches’ guidance, noting that she would not be the person she is today without them.

Thanks to their support, the energy of the teammates around her, and her desire to be great, Leigh’s high school career has been one to remember.

“My goal this year is to make the most of it,” Leigh said. “With everything being uncertain in the pandemic, it’s about having as much fun as possible, but also safely as possible.”
