Ms. Gwendoline Margaret Rea, 86, of Goldsboro and formerly of England, peacefully passed away on October 16, 2020 at her daughters’ home.

Gwen had a great love for God’s creatures. She was passionate about rescuing animals and caring for the feral cat population in and around her hometown. She was also blessed with a beautiful soprano voice. Gwendoline attended The Birmingham School of Music and performed in London Theatre shows during the early 1950’s. She was an employee of Cherry Hospital as the Volunteer Services Coordinator; working with the community to provide amazing/memorable activities to bring joy to the lives of the individuals that she served.

A graveside service of remembrance will be held on Tuesday, October 20, 2020 at 2:00 pm at the Evergreen Cemetery (3888 US 70 W) in Princeton, N.C. with Pastor Rusty Conyers and son, John Rea speaking. Family and friends are welcome to attend.

Gwen is survived by her sons, Stephen Rea and wife, Phyllis of Charlotte; John Rea and wife, Nancy of Snow Hill and by a daughter, Michelle Shellhammer of Cameron. She is also survived by her grandson, Tyler Rea; a sister, Jeannette (Bob) Mackie of England and her brothers, Charles (Mary) Carpenter and John (Alex) Carpenter, both of England. In addition, she is survived by a niece and four nephews, all living in England.

She was proceeded in death by her parents, Charles Augustus Carpenter and Margaret Kate Styles of England.

The family would like to extend a heartfelt Thank You to Teresa Brink for the love and for the care that she provided for our Mom. We are equally grateful for our Heaven-sent Hospice Angels (Suzanne, Janice, Michelle and Pastor O’Quinn) for the care given to our Mom and for your emotional support.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorials be given in her memory to The Wayne County Animal Shelter, 1600 Clingman Street, Goldsboro, NC or to the American Syringomyelia and Chiari Alliance Project (ASAP), P.O. Box 1586, Longview, Texas 75606-1586.
