Wayne County teachers make one last push to keep students learning remotely as the coronavirus pandemic rages on.
Thursday, the Wayne County Association of Educators and other community members held a “One Last Chance” car caravan and rally urging the Wayne County Board of Education to reverse its previous decision and stick with the plan C remote instruction option for the first nine weeks of class.
Bishop William J. Barber, II, is the Pastor of Greenleaf Christian Church in Goldsboro and a leader of the national Poor Peoples Campaign. Barber says going back to school too early will disproportionately affect poor families.
WCAE Vice-President Joe Beamon says school staff have a list of what needs to happen before schools reopen, including better preparation on the virtual learning technology and sanitizing measures.
Brogden Middle School Teacher Mark Colebrook says the district is not ready and there should have been comprehensive testing for staff heading back to the school buildings.
The Wayne County school board had voted to utilize remote learning for the first three weeks of class for most schools.
Under the current plan approved by the school board, all Wayne County Public Schools will transition to the hybrid remote and in-person instruction Plan B on Tuesday, September 8.
