Durwood Belmon Bailey, Jr., 68, went to be with his Lord on Friday, May 22, 2020 while surrounded by his family.

Belmon was born in Wilson County on October 15, 1951 to Faye Barnes Bailey of Goldsboro and the late Durwood Belmon Bailey, Sr. He proudly served his country in the United States Army Reserve for 27 years and retired with the rank of Sergeant First Class. Belmon retired from Wayne County Public Schools after 38 years of service as an electrician.

Belmon lived a life of dedication to his family and friends, and to his community. He proudly served the Oakland Community for over 45 years as a dedicated fireman with the Oakland Fire Department. The Wayne County Agriculture Fair was an important part of Belmon’s life and he worked with them for 43 years. He was a member of Oakland Community Church.

Belmon was a man known for his unconditional love for people shown by the abundance of hugs he gave. Anyone who met him was warmed by his love and affection. Belmon had a huge heart, always giving and reaching out to others, there wasn’t a stranger he hadn’t met. He loved to make people laugh. Most would remember the joy that Belmon’s presence would bring.

A time of visitation will be held on Wednesday, May 27, 2020 from 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. at the Oakland Fire Department, 617 Oakland Church Road, Princeton. A service celebrating Belmon’s life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, May 28, 2020 in the chapel of Seymour Funeral Home with Pastor Phil Bowden officiating. He will be laid to rest at the Eastern Carolina State Veterans Cemetery.

In addition to his mother, Belmon is survived by his wife of almost 47 years, Vickie Clayton Bailey; son, Chris Bailey; daughter, Crystal Langdon; grandchildren, Allecia Langdon and McKenna Bailey; and brother, Joseph Bailey Sr. and wife Kay. He is also survived by his sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Debbie and Larry Mitchell and Teresa and Bob McGivney; as well as several nieces and nephews he loved very much.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggest memorials be given in his memory to Oakland Community Church, 921 Oakland Church Road, Princeton, NC 27569 or to the Oakland Fire Department, 617 Oakland Church Road, Princeton, NC 27569.
