GOLDSBORO, NC – Goldsboro firefighters responded early Wednesday morning to a vehicle fire involving a semi-truck in the 2400 block of South Slocumb Street.
According to officials, fire units were dispatched at approximately 2:50 a.m. on Jan. 7, 2026, after receiving a report of a vehicle fire. Upon arrival, the first unit found the tractor portion of a semi-truck fully engulfed in flames. Firefighters initiated a quick attack and requested an additional unit to establish a water supply.
A total of eight fire personnel and three fire vehicles responded to the incident. The fire was brought under control and fully extinguished by 3:26 a.m. The tractor, valued at an estimated $50,000, was declared a total loss.
Officials said the truck driver acted quickly after discovering the fire by disconnecting the tractor from the trailer, which was hauling batteries, and moving the vehicle to a safer location. This action prevented damage to the cargo and helped avert a potential hazardous materials incident.
During the fire, the truck’s saddle fuel tanks ruptured, causing a fuel spill that prompted a response from Wayne County Emergency Management. The City of Goldsboro’s Public Works Department also responded to assist with spill mitigation and cleanup efforts. City personnel remained on scene until approximately 9 a.m. to remove debris and address environmental concerns. An environmental services company was called in to dispose of contaminated materials and drain remaining fuel from the vehicle.
No injuries were reported among those involved or responding personnel. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
Multiple agencies worked collaboratively to minimize the impact of the incident, including the Goldsboro Police Department, Goldsboro Public Works and Public Utilities departments, Wayne County Emergency Management, Edwards Truck Service, Eastern Environmental Clean-up, Seymour Johnson Fire Department, and others assisting on scene.
